I’d like to introduce my new best friend. She’s silver on the outside and plush tan velour with faux walnut wood on the inside. She talks to me in Japanese, so I call her Geisha. Geisha is a 2005 Toyota Estima, an eight seater people mover. She’s an automatic, with 85,000kms on the clock and is immaculate inside. When I’m driving her, it’s like sitting on a big comfy couch, so darn comfortable – she rides smooth (unlike say, a Toyota hiace) and high (I love a high perch when driving). I … [Read more...]
Two bakeries bike ride
A bike ride event recently popped up on Facebook that looked like fun…the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail - 50 kilometres - 2 bakeries! Pretty sure I had the bakeries covered, but would my legs be up for this BVRT challenge? Only one way to find out! Just so you know, I’m not bike fit (the last time I cycled the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail I was on an ebike). But I really enjoy off-road riding and figured this half day ride was a nice chance to get back on my bike. So I packed Geisha (all the … [Read more...]
Why solo travel for ladies is becoming a show stopper
Some things are best shared…. and travel is one of those things. Sharing adventures, memories, reassurance, safety - these last two are especially important for us gals. So why is solo travel for ladies becoming a show stopper? I was single for many years, but didn’t let that stop me from adventuring. Even now I often travel on my own. I’ve become very comfortable travelling on my own. I really LIKE travelling on my own. I can explore where I want, take as many photos as I want… and I’m an … [Read more...]
Starting vanlife
At the end of 2017 I reflected back on the year that was and the words ‘Annus horribilis’ came to mind. Why? Because I didn’t get to travel much! I felt a wee bit trapped because after paying my mortgage and bills (my body corporate doubled on me last year) there was very little left in the travel kitty. And given that travel is how I create happy Shan (and how I recharge my batteries) it’s as much a need as a want (well that’s my story and I’m sticking to it). By anyone’s standards I DID … [Read more...]
Scenic Rim road trip
My photographer buddy @imagjen_ and I went exploring the Scenic Rim recently, two gals who love taking pics and eating good food – road trip woohoo!! It was such an incredible weekend that Madeline was inspired to dedicate a whole photo series to the Scenic Rim… and I launched a new Instagram account to showcase all the amazing foodie experiences out there (follow along at @tastescenicrim). I’m going to share my itinerary so you can plan your own weekend escape (OK, technically it’s a … [Read more...]

The team at QT Gold Coast have served me some fabulous foodie experiences during the last year that are simply too good not to share… so here are my top 5 reasons to visit QT now: Cocktails at Stingray Bar A funky retro vibe welcomes you at Stingray Bar. Not too big, not too small, this groovy bar is cosy and spacious all at the same time. Originally a California-style tequila bar it’s now morphing into a high-end cocktail bar. So, you’ve got a ticket to the exclusive Dîner en Blanc woohoo! Like me, you’re probably blissfully unaware of what you’ve just committed too… Never fear, I’ve written this post just for you, to help get your head around the myriad of rules and logistical genius you’ll need to take a seat at the big white table… read on my friend (you might want to take notes, kidding… not really). What is Dîner en Blanc? The story goes that ‘dinner in white’ started as a gourmet meal between a group of … [Read more...]
5 reasons you’ll love the Paleo Camping Retreat
It’s not often you get to sit around a campfire talking about the benefits of bone broth, but that’s exactly what we did at the Paleo Camping Retreat last year. This awesome Paleo Camping weekend is run by Aimee and Clint from Primal Influence, and Dan the Aussie Paleo Chef. Different to your usual yoga-girls-with-green-smoothies retreat… it includes Paleo cooking demonstrations, slack lining and natural play, a bush tucker walk, star gazing, swimming in the creek, and the best soul-warming … [Read more...]
Unwind with a Tweed River Cruise
I’ve driven over the Tweed River many times but last week I actually got to float down it, thanks to Tweed Endeavour Cruises. The Tweed River flows through Northern New South Wales and was discovered in 1823 by John Oxley, an English explorer and surveyor. He reported that the scenery here ‘exceeded anything I have previously seen in Australia’ – and after this river cruise I can see what he was on about…. Our cruise starts at Tweed Marina and it’s all aboard for a 9.30am departure. Our … [Read more...]
Big Red Bash
My friend Ben decided to take a 4 tone converted ambulance into one of the world's biggest sand dunes...driving all the way from Brisbane to Birdsville for this year’s iconic event, the Big Red Bash – a music festival in the middle of the Australian outback that attracts thousands of people from all over the country. Birdsville is one of Queensland’s most renowned and remote towns, famous for a tradition of outback adventure and old pioneering spirit. It is literally in the middle of … [Read more...]
