30 new things in 30 days

I’ve had this idea for awhile now, to try 30 new things in 30 days. For some strange reason this crazy idea of mine pops up at the beginning of the year – it’s been mulling around in the underground carpark of my mind for, oooh about the last 3 or 4 years.

So this year I decided feck it – I’m doing it. Challege accepted.

Because I’m curious. To see what it’s like to try 30 new things in 30 days. And because, why not!  The idea of ticking off a whole lot of things that I’ve wanted to do in a short space of time really appeals. And because if I don’t make it happen my idea will drift away into nothingness or it will find someone else to manifest it (have you read Elizabeth Gilbert’s book Big Magic?).

The best way to jazz up life and break up the boring routine is to do something new. It could be something as simple as brushing your teeth with the other hand, or driving a different route to work.

Research shows that doing a new thing sparks our brain, our neurons get excited. Our brain snaps to attention – because something is new and different. Think of all your best memories, were you doing something new? Liz Moody calls it The Novelty Rule.

Follow my challenge

I started my challenge on the third Monday in January. This day has become known as ‘the saddest day of the year’ because it’s when we’re most likely to be suffering from the post holiday blues.

I’m about halfway through my challenge now. New things I’ve tried include a lymphatic massage, Japanese souffle pancakes, and a dance fit class at the gym. Most new things I’ve tried have been awesome (except maybe the dance fit one lol)

30 new things (I can’t do that, oh yes you can)

It’s funny, when I’ve talked about my challlege to other women, the response is ‘oh wow, I couldn’t do that’. Yeh, you could. If you wanted to. It just takes a bit of planning at the start of the week so you know what your new thing is each day. It’s helpful to have a couple of quick and easy things to do as a backup for those days where life happens, like trying a new flavour of ice cream, cooking a new recipe, or starting a new book.

Maybe you could take on doing one new thing a week, or month. Allocate 2 hours on a Sunday to do your new thing. Simples. It will get you thinking outside the box a little. Try it. I dare you.

Planning and dreaming is actually the best part. Grab a piece of paper and brainstorm your list of new things you want to try. How great would it be to tick some of those off in the next 30 days?
