Taps is a fun new bar in Surfers Paradise – launched 3 weeks ago, this place is a little unique because it’s PYOB – pour your own beer. Yep, now you’re barman for the night!
You load credit onto a plastic card when you arrive then use it to pour your beers. You’re charged by the ml which means you can pour as much or as little as you like, so you can sample every beer before deciding to pour a schooner of your fav.
It’s all too easy, you simply grab a frosted glass from the fridge and pour, pour, pour! A schooner costs around $8-9 and after every 3 schooners you have to check in with management (sobriety check) before you can pour any more.
Cider and an awesome alcoholic ginger beer are available on PYO as well as 8 craft beers from around Australia. The beers are rotated every 2 weeks to keep things interesting and their motto ‘We don’t drink shit beer’ is proudly proclaimed on the walls.
Once you’ve poured your beer (or in my case ginger beer) you can chill out on the balcony, play a game of ping pong, or compete with your friends for the title of Supreme Lord of Giant Jenga. There’s even a very rare old-school Mortal Kombat arcade game to test your reflexes on.
The bar is spacious and nicely presented with wooden beams, wine barrels and colourful wall art. Music is selected by customers via an app called Crowd DJ and they have live music 3 nights a week (bigger ticketed gigs coming soon). Wednesday is cheap wings night with 10 chicken wings for $5, (if you can handle the heat try them with Reaper Sauce, made from one of the world’s hottest chillies).
The self-serve beer system has been custom built into a huge pillar so it’s easily accessible and you can waltz around trying all the craft beers. Your money is refunded if there’s any credit left on your card when you want to head home.
Taps Australia is a new franchise which has already launched in Surfers Paradise, Fortitude Valley (Brisbane) and Mooloolaba, with plans to open in Adelaide, Sydney, Mackay and Melbourne.
Recommendation: Taps is great for date night or a Sunday afternoon sesh with friends, just mind your beer glass when playing Giant Jenga! Taps is very laid back, spacious and fun, and the novelty of pouring your own beer means you can show off your bar skills and your hipster knowledge of craft beer.
