Impeccable timing has meant that not only am I in New Zealand for the America’s Cup yacht racing (not the result we wanted but exciting to watch nonetheless), I’m also here for the launch of The Smoothie Club – a gathering of smoothie freaks, health nuts and nutrition fanatics to network and talk about all things smoothie.
Started by my friend Kim from Kimmithgone, the first ever Smoothie Club was held last week in Mount Maunganui. A guest speaker (a psychologist) talked about the connection between ‘food and mood’, and acai and camu camu were profiled as the ‘feature’ superfoods of the evening. Kim then whipped up a special blend smoothie for the punters to taste. Twenty-five people showed up. People want to know about this stuff!
Smoothie Club Auckland took place tonight at Federal & Wolfe café in the CBD. Thirty people showed up to hear Kim, and Hannah from Health Yeah share their thoughts on smoothies and superfoods. Kim did a quick poll to find out everyone’s favourite smoothie ingredient – chia seeds and cacao came out trumps.
As we went around the room introducing ourselves, it was fascinating to hear people’s stories – café owners, nutrition students, bloggers, naturopaths, chefs, and a guy with a new food truck – all drawn together to talk about smoothies. Sickness to wellness journeys were shared, and a genuine sense of connection rippled around the room.
It was bigger than just smoothies though. Community, sustainability and ‘education not medication’ drove big picture discussions. Kim spoke about hemp seed oil and using bamboo and glass straws. Hannah spoke about the importance of sourcing locally, supporting local producers and businesses and growing your own greens.
Who would have thought – the humble green smoothie, symbol for a new consciousness about nutrition and self empowerment. A room full of like-minded people geeking out together about green smoothies – The Smoothie Club has tapped something. This could be the start of something big….
