Over the last 12 months I have tried to reduce the amount of dairy I eat after discovering it has an inflammatory effect on the body. I use nut milk as a substitute (not a fan of soy milk). Almond milk is my 'go to' nut milk and I like to have it in the fridge to use in my smoothies and on my homemade granola (it’s not quite right in my morning cuppa though!). It’s super easy to make your own nut milk and waaaay better than buying the tetrapak stuff from the shops, which often have added … [Read more...]
New Zealand kai – at the markets
I’ve been back in Oz for nearly 2 weeks now but wanted to post about some of the yummy kai (Maori word for food) I had at the markets I went to while in New Zealand. I love going to farmers markets, making new foodie discoveries and sampling old favourites like Devonshire teas. I enjoyed the lightest, fluffiest scone I think I’ve ever tasted in a Devonshire tea at the Tamahere Markets near Hamilton. Served (and probably made) by some lovely old ladies in an old country hall I was happy in the … [Read more...]
Geeking out over smoothies
Impeccable timing has meant that not only am I in New Zealand for the America’s Cup yacht racing (not the result we wanted but exciting to watch nonetheless), I'm also here for the launch of The Smoothie Club - a gathering of smoothie freaks, health nuts and nutrition fanatics to network and talk about all things smoothie. Started by my friend Kim from Kimmithgone, the first ever Smoothie Club was held last week in Mount Maunganui. A guest speaker (a psychologist) talked about the connection … [Read more...]
Hunting raw in Auckland – Little Bird Organics
My sister-in-law Nic thought I might enjoy Little Bird Café (Kingsland, Auckland), so one morning last week she picked me up and we made a beeline to this wonderful little ‘unbakery’. The team at Little Bird believe that food should taste amazing, AND make you feel amazing - I totally agree! Serving organic and raw food (ie. not heated above 46 degrees), they sprout and activate their own nuts and seeds and their cakes are sans gluten, dairy, sugar and soy. They are obviously doing … [Read more...]
‘Cooking’ class with Raw Food Bali
I went to a raw food workshop here in Ubud with Jonny Fresh from Raw Food Bali. At the beginning of the class Jon, a cruisey Canadian, explained that he was once your typical beer drinking, pizza eating uni student until he went travelling and happened to meet a raw foodist. After being introduced to the world of raw Jon embarked on an 8 day juice fast, then went 100% raw for 3 months (these days he sits around 85-95% raw food diet). Jon then completed a raw food training course with Elaina … [Read more...]
Great chai in Ubud, and coffee
I love a good cup of chai, but in my experience a good cup of chai is really hard to find. Yesterday I unexpectedly stumbled across my best chai ever at a hip coffee shop here in Ubud called Seniman. Now, I’m not a coffee drinker, so I hadn’t stopped by Seniman for the coffee. No, I had actually stopped by for their porridge! Yes, they do a great big bowl of steaming hot porridge with coconut milk and strawberries, and given that my tonsils are the size of golf balls at the moment I had made … [Read more...]
Mushrooms, ‘erbs and David Wolfe
If you haven’t heard of David Wolfe before, then I recommend you check him out. He is a world renowned expert in nutritional health and well being. He is touring Australia at the moment and yesterday I went to the Brisbane Convention Centre to hear what he had to say. He was on stage for more than six hours, sharing his perspective expanding wisdom - I was in my element! This doesn’t begin to scratch the surface of his lecture, but here are a few of the insights I gained from David’s … [Read more...]
