Christmas isn’t Christmas without fruit mince pies. They’re one of the few treats you can’t get year round (right up there with Hot Cross buns) so I do a little happy dance when I can get my hands these spicy delights at Yule time. Hello little mince pies, my how Christmassy you are, come over here and make me merry…
I’m a bit fussy with my fruit mince pies now though, and avoid supermarket offerings (because if they’re making hot cross buns 6 months in advance you know their fruit pies are on the same schedule too!).
This year I decided to do some taste testing to find THE BEST CHRISTMAS FRUIT MINCE PIE IN BRISBANE.
OK, that’s a bit of an exaggeration, more like, the best fruit mince pie within a 5km radius of me. Potato, po-tah-toe.
So what exactly makes a good Christmas fruit mince pie? The pastry has to be sweet, buttery, crumbly, soft, and melt in your mouth. And the fruit mince has to be gooey and spicy. And plentiful!
I noticed a disturbing trend – smaller, more polite, bite size pies. This simply will not do. I need something substantial to savour and enjoy! Points were lost for small pies. Too stingy with the mince = more points lost.
I’ve eaten a lot of pies over the last few weeks. May have overdone it actually…but by the time next Christmas rolls around I’m sure we’ll be friends again.
So, after munching through a very fine selection, I’m thrilled to announce the WINNER of the Eat Well Travel Often Award for Best Christmas Mince Pie in Brisbane is……
Drum roll please…..
Are we there yet….
The winner is – SOL BREADS IN WEST END!! *confetti cannon* (no, I read the card right, this is not Miss Universe).
It was a close call, with Cake & Bake coming a close second (they win best pie pastry), but in the end it was the overall taste and the hearty size of the Christmas mince fruit pies at Sol Breads that sold me – congratulations guys, another accolade to add to the shelf!
So there you have it. I’ve eaten more Christmas fruit mince pies than you can poke a stick at, and now, it’s nearly time for my big Christmas feast…one more sleep!!
Thanks for joining me here on the blog this year, I hope you’ve enjoyed my posts – stay tuned for some exciting EWTO events and adventures next year!
Merry Christmas, Joyeux Noël, Mele Kalikimaka, Gleðileg jól, Frohe Weihnachten, Nollaig Shona Dhuit, Buon Natale, and Meri Kirihimete!!
ps. Let me know in the comments if you know an amazing Xmas mince pie maker I need to check out next year!
