You only need to look around at the cafes, restaurants and taxi drivers to find plenty of evidence of the entrepreneurs here in Ubud. This morning I went on a little adventure to meet one of them. This young fellow is a little bit special. His name is Putu and he is just 14 years old.
Putu came up with the idea of making drinking straws out of bamboo. Assisted by his father, he sources a supply of special bamboo from Singaraja, which he brings home to dry in the sun for a month. He then cuts the long rods to size (short or long straws), dries them for a further two days, then cleans and packages them for sale. Putu spends time making the straws every day before school. He now sells a steady supply to cafes and restaurants and is using the money to pay for his school fees.
Plastic straws are one of my bugbears, we need to stop using them.
Putu has come up with a brilliant sustainable alternative!
It was such a delight to meet young Putu, though I’m not too sure what he made of this strange woman turning up at his house to take his picture. Putu you inspire me. If these straws are anything to go by you have a bright future ahead of you.
