Last night I met some dear friends at Canvas Wine and Cocktail Bar in Brisbane. Nestled discretely among the clutch of restaurants in the Woolloongabba antiques precinct (I walked right past - there's no sign, almost like they don't wont to be found, like you have to be in the club to know they're even there). We ordered drinks to sip as we caught up on all the months since our last reunion. A funeral. A new romance. A grandchild. And a new home. We nibble tapas - spicy prawns, pork belly, … [Read more...]
Travel tips from a not so flightless Kiwi
Are you a mosquito magnet? Do they buzz you like a swarm of tiny drones? Me too! If there’s a mosquito party I’m always invited, and even though I cover up every inch of skin, they always find a way in (clearly I’m not drinking enough gin and tonic). And there’s nothing worse than itching when you’re on the road travelling. So here’s a little tip - tea tree oil. Yep, this magical liquid soothes an itchy bite right down, Melaleuca alternifolia how I love thee! My little bottle of tea … [Read more...]

My friend Kerry sells organic cotton t-shirts and I think that’s cool
I’ve posted on Facebook before about the pair of jean’s I bought from a well-known store in town. They were that dark blue denim, a rich deep colour that I loved. I washed them before use (please ALWAYS wash your clothes before you wear them as they are often sprayed with chemicals to help preserve them during shipping), then put them on for the first time. After a while wearing my new jeans I became aware of a strong chemical smell. It eventually became so disconcerting I took them … [Read more...]
South Bank Dessert Walking Tour
**Warning: If you’ve Quit Sugar then stop reading now. This blog post may be way too much temptation. I’ve just done the South Bank Dessert Walking Tour – and it was a ridiculously fun way to spend a Saturday morning (even if I now have sugar burn to rival Willy Wonka!). Karen, our Tour Leader and a fellow foodie, started our tour with a history of desserts. The first apple pie recipe dates from 1381. And in 1740 they made the first cupcake! That Aussie icon the Lamington was created … [Read more...]
Tips for a weekend in Port Douglas
Port Douglas is No. 3 on Australian Traveller magazine's list of 100 Best Towns in Australia. On the Queen’s birthday weekend I went to Port Doug with my boyfriend – we booked a package holiday - something I’ve not really done before – the package part, not the holiday :-) It seemed to cover what we needed; flights, accommodation, airport transfers, breakfast included and a cocktail on arrival (yay!) – but handing over your travel plans to someone else can be risky, and we won’t be doing … [Read more...]
Blog back on track
The reason it's been so quite around here is because I got hacked. At first I got angry, because who does that? 'Bad people'. I tried to fix things, but really it was too little too late - with my extensive coding experience (baa haa ha) I just ended up getting hugely frustrated and put it in the too hard basket. So poor old bloggy sat here without much lovin. But now, I think the problem is sorted!!! And I'm really excited about that! Because what I realised is, I really love … [Read more...]
My hipster laundry mat
So my washing machine broke (gah!). I put it off as long as I could, but when the bathtub was full up of dirty washing I could deny it no more. Time. To visit. The LAUNDRY MAT. I can’t think laundry mat without recalling that sexy advert from the eighties, yeah this one Might happen right? I haven’t hung out in a laundry mat since my backpacker days. And when the house flooded and I had to wash every piece of clothing and linen I owned (that was a long day). I ventured in. And it … [Read more...]
Weekend Away Hiking O’Reillys
A microadventure at O’Reillys Rainforest retreat – that’s right - a microadventure! (Love that new word - thank you Alastair Humphreys). Leaving work early on a Friday meant I didn't have to drive up the mountain in the dark, (VERY hairy road, but stunningly beautiful). The drive takes about 2 hours from Brisbane, well, a tad longer after I threw in a stop at the quaint little town of Canungra at the base of the mountain. In Canungra I found a gem called Earthy Delights Café (vegan, … [Read more...]
My scary mortgage
On Thursday I signed the contract on an apartment. My very own place. My first home! This is really big for me. When I was a little girl I always wanted Dad to build my first house. He was a chippy and built the wonderful family home that I grew up in, and I was fairly confident he’d like to build me a house when I grew up. Sadly that was never to be, as Dad passed away well before I ever considered home ownership. Here in Australia most people seem to buy a house at some point, it's … [Read more...]
