I checked out Lester and Earl the other night, a popular American BBQ style eatery at Palm Beach on the Gold Coast. The entrance is hard to find if you don’t know it’s there, with an unmarked doorway leading you upstairs to a large restaurant and bar with veranda seating (four units were purchased to create the venue). I loved the décor, lots of dark wood gives a saloon-like feeling, upcycled crystal decanters hang above the bar, and old wine barrels remind you to try a tipple at the bar. … [Read more...]
Mister Fitz’s monster Ice Cream Sandwich
“It’s Friday, life is good... I might swing by and try one of those fancy new ice cream sandwiches” I chirp to myself, with little appreciation for the sugar tsunami that’s about to come my way. Mister Fitz is a new Brisbane oasis for those with an overactive sweet tooth, located on Grey Street in South Bank, across the road from that other dessert champion Cowch (and right next to Doughhnut Time!) There's also one in the Valley. The concept is simple: build your own Ice Cream sandwich – … [Read more...]
Why I’m using the Self Journal to plan my year
The interweb is swimming in ‘new year new you, drink green smoothies, set fabulous goals’ wisdom right now – and that’s perfectly perfect, because now is the ultimate time to set some goals for the year ahead. A fresh, crisp year to play with….oooh I just love it! This year I’m trying to keep goal setting simple, because I really overdid it last year (spending a whole day coming up with a big list of intentions that mostly never made it off the page). There are stacks of year planners and … [Read more...]
Best Christmas fruit mince pie in Brisbane
Christmas isn’t Christmas without fruit mince pies. They’re one of the few treats you can’t get year round (right up there with Hot Cross buns) so I do a little happy dance when I can get my hands these spicy delights at Yule time. Hello little mince pies, my how Christmassy you are, come over here and make me merry… I’m a bit fussy with my fruit mince pies now though, and avoid supermarket offerings (because if they’re making hot cross buns 6 months in advance you know their fruit pies are … [Read more...]
Foodie fun on the Burleigh walking tour
Gold Coast Food and Wine Tours has just launched, and I was invited to be one of the first to taste test their new Burleigh walking tour! After driving from Brisbane with my friend Clare, we joined the Saturday morning tour, which started at the sleep-in-friendly time of 10am. Our host, the ‘food-tastic’ Karen, is a Gold Coast local and self-confessed ‘food fanatic’, her tastebuds have taken her on many grand adventures (early next year she will be eating her way around Japan). After … [Read more...]
3 days in Kakadu
It was hot. There were flies. All par for the course on this fair dinkum Aussie outback adventure to Kakadu! I recently joined Wayoutback Australian Safaris for a 3 day tour through world famous Kakadu National Park in the tropical Northern Territory. I caught a flight to Darwin and joined 15 other backpackers on a tour to see some of the most spectacular scenery in Australia. Kakadu covers a huge area, almost 20,000 kms (Australia’s largest national park) and has been home to Aboriginal … [Read more...]
Sydney whale tales
I had a whale of a time in Sydney last weekend when I joined Oz Whale Watching as a guest on one of their tours, it was a humbling experience. I joined their Saturday morning breakfast cruise which left the docks at Darling Harbour around 8am. The catamaran was spacious and I found a seat on the upper deck, as we made our way up the harbour to the ‘heads’ (harbour entrance). It was a glorious day with a big blue sky and sunshine that wasn’t too scorching. Our guide introduces himself … [Read more...]
A weekend in Yamba
A long weekend means it’s time to get away, so last week I drove south to Yamba - I’d heard a lot of good things and was keen to explore. It was a beautiful drive, and on the way I stopped at Bangalow for lunch at Choux Choux Patisserie. I crossed the Clarence River several times on some rather striking bridges, including Harwood Bridge which lifts up to let boats pass underneath. The Clarence snakes its way through the region, finally meeting the sea between Iluka and Yamba. It … [Read more...]
Maleny Real Food Festival
The Real Food Festival gathers the best artisan food producers from around the Sunshine Coast to celebrate regional flavours and showcase local food – it makes for a great day out with the girls! My Eat Well Travel Often tour departed Brisbane a little after 8am with a vanload of hungry gals (we all skipped breakfast to make the most of our impending day of feasting). We got to sit back and relax while being chauffeur driven to Maleny. For me the best part of the festival was making new … [Read more...]
Native High Tea at Tukka
Last Sunday was my Native High Tea event at Tukka – one of the highlights was being served cute little garden pots of white chocolate mousse with chocolate soil…. Tukka is a restaurant in Brisbane’s West End, with a vision to take the flavour of the bush to the plate, using uniquely Australian ingredients like kangaroo and quandong. We were joined by Head Chef and owner Bryant Wells who told us he fell in love with the restaurant when he dined there as a customer one evening. As a chef … [Read more...]
